One of my friends recently announced her pregnancy and I noticed a comment on one of her pictures that brought memories back from when I was pregnant. The comment was something like, “Congrats on your pregnancy, are you wanting a boy or girl?” I know the comment was said with good intentions and seems harmless, but it made me cringe a little when I read it because that was one comment I disliked during my pregnancies.
I recently saw an article circulating through Facebook called 8 Things You Should NEVER Say to A Pregnant Woman. The title alone immediately brought back memories of the two comments I dreaded the most when I was pregnant; “Are you wanting a boy or a girl,” and “The baby looks like it hasn’t dropped yet.” When I read the article it made me giggle because a lot of those comments seem harmless, but to a pregnant woman they are total no, no’s! My reason for disliking the comment “are you wanting a boy or a girl,” was it never mattered to me. I know some people may have a preference on the sex of their baby and there is nothing wrong that, after all it is your baby. But, to me, even though pregnancy is a beautiful thing, it can be a little scary at times too. Growing little legs isn’t always easy you know! So, with both of my pregnancies I was just content with having a healthy baby no matter the sex. The other comment I disliked hearing when I was pregnant, “the baby looks like it hasn’t dropped yet,” was one I luckily didn’t have to hear for as long as the first comment. I mean come on people, do you really think a woman in her third trimester who’s huge, swollen, and hormonal really wants to be told that her baby hasn’t dropped yet? My theory is unless you are a doctor, or more specifically an OBGYN, there’s no need to crush a pregnant woman’s hope of her baby being born sooner than later.
What’s your thoughts? I would love to hear about the comments you disliked the most during your pregnancies! Please share : )
